Today is Giving Tuesday, a global movement of generosity. It’s a day when we focus our attention on supporting the nonprofit organizations that make our world a better place: the food banks, health clinics, affordable housing providers, arts organizations, and so on.
The social safety net organizations are the ones we turn to when the chips are down, and right now they are down for so many. Our social safety net is fraying under the weight of the demand as a result of COVID-19 and its economic fallout.
Those of us who can, must step up and give whatever we can to support these essential organizations. They are there for others because of us. They are caring for and supporting people that are forgotten. And they are working against impossible odds. I hope you will join me in donating to the organizations and causes that matter to you. Here are a few of mine:
- Jubilee Housing, a nonprofit housing developer in DC
- Arlington Thrive, providing emergency financial support so that people can pay their rent and not fall further into debt from which they can’t recover
- Doctors Without Borders providing medical care in war torn and other hard-hit areas
- World Central Kitchen, feeding people here in the US and all over the world.
‘Tis the season for giving and Giving Tuesday kicks it off. But in reality we should find ways to give our time and treasure all year round. We will all be better for it.
